A climate change meeting with over 1,000 delegates took place in Bangkok on Monday the 28th. The talks aimed at working on a draft text that would replace the Kyoto Protocol. The meeting, which runs until October 9th, is the last round of negotiations before a climate change summit in Copenhagen in December. [Yvo de Boer, U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change]: "The Bangkok talks must end in an evident spirit of cooperation and with evident progress. I believe that the pace of action in the negotiations can and will match an increasing pace of action that we are seeing at the highest level." The negotiations are moving slowly with many major issues still not dealt with. [Connie Hedegaard, Ministry of Climate & Energy, Denmark]: "But we have to politically agree on all key parameters in Copenhagen. That's exactly what's needed in a global deal. So, let us move along so we can reach the ambitious agreed outcome by Copenhagen. It is wise, it is necessary and if you work hard in the next few weeks it is still doable." Greenpeace activists also held a demonstration outside the U.N. building in Bangkok, demanding a fair agreement to pave the way for the Copenhagen summit. [Thara Buacamsri, Greenpeace Activist]: "We hope that there will be something that they will agree here, especially on the adaptation funds on forest protection to help developing countries cope with climate change impact." The U.N.-led negotiations have become bogged down over arguments about rich nations' targets to cut emissions by 2020, financing for poorer nations to adapt to climate change and to curb their own greenhouse gas emissions.
